Check council resolutions for their climate relevance with KlimaCheck
With the declaration of a climate emergency, municipalities have come to recognize that mitigating the climate crisis is a top priority. In the future, climate-conscious municipalities will therefore check all draft resolutions for their impact on climate policy (climate protection and climate change adaptation). In order to lend support cities and municipalities on this path, energielenker has developed the KlimaCheck.

What does the KlimaCheck do?
KlimaCheck is an Excel tool used to assess climate relevance when draft resolutions are prepared for political bodies and to indicate this in the draft resolutions. The tool is easy to use and adapts to the individual requirements and needs of a municipality. The main topics and fields of action, such as mobility, buildings, etc., can be simply expanded as required.
The tool uses a three-step inquiry system to determine the impact on climate protection and any climate change adaptations.
- Preliminary assessment of climate relevance
- Rough assessment
- KlimaCheck evaluation of the impact on the environment

Step 1
If a decision has no climate relevance, e.g. because it is only a matter of renaming a street, the responsible representative can simply substantiate this finding and thus minimize their workload. Processing would end at this point.
Step 2
In case of further uncertainty, the representative can perform a basic check based on five general questions in order to make a rough assessment of the climate relevance of the project in question. If the result is positive, the representative goes on to the 3rd step – the key part of the KlimaCheck.
Step 3
In this step, the representative can make a selection from various fields of action. Possible fields of action used to evaluate the environmental impact of the decision in question include construction, urban development, and mobility. Based on the answers to specific questions, the result is then represented on a scale and in bar charts. In the event of a significant negative impact on the climate, this procedure makes it possible early on to identify potential for improvement and optimization and to initiate measures.
